Rally falls short in Women’s Hoops home opener

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — For the second time in as many games, the St. Mary's Rattlers went down to the wire, only to come up short, this time it was against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday night as the Rattlers fell 48-46.

Trailing by as many as 11 in the third quarter, the Rattlers rallied, closing out the period on a 9-0 run that was capped by a last second shot from the baseline by Alexia Torres who would finish the game with seven points, three assists and two rebounds.

Led by a strong 15 point, eight rebound and three assist performance by Arysia Porter, the Rattlers took the lead late off a three-pointer by Kealani Marquez, who finished with eight points, five rebounds and a pair of dimes.

In her first game at home, freshman Hannah Wilson impressed, scoring nine points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field while grabbing four rebounds.

Both teams traded baskets down the stretch, but it was the Javelinas that got the last word as a layup with 10 seconds left would be the difference in the ballgame.

St. Mary's will look to bounce back this weekend at the Lubbock Christian Classic beginning on Friday when it takes on Texas-Permian Basin at 4 p.m.
