Women's Tennis put to test at ITA Regional

By Georgie Gosen | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

MIDLAND, Texas —  Team unity has never been so important for the Lady Rattlers as they suffered a tough draw that put them face to face with each other multiple times throughout the ITA Regional this past weekend.

"I know our team is stronger than ever," Kaylin Kruseman said. "We had all our team in doubles fighting and competing against each other. I know we are only going to push the bar and each other to be the best we can be."

For No. 1 seed Kruseman and teammate Tyra Timm, it was a long road to the doubles final having to face fellow teammates Paulina Torres and Rani Goodland in the quarterfinals, winning an intense 8-6 battle. The semifinal followed shortly after with the No. 1 seeds quickly regrouping to challenge Ally Maciel and Alex Corder for a spot in the final. A grueling match led the No.1 seeds to get ahead for an 8-6 victory.

With their teammates behind them, Kruseman and Timm took on Midwestern State's Maddy Coffman and Bianca Duff for a shot at the ITA Regional title. What would turn out to be a severe nail-biting fight to the finish unfortunately saw Kruseman and Timm drop the match, 8-7.

"I couldn't have asked for a more inspiring doubles partner to have experienced Fall Regionals with," Timm said. "It was tough playing against teammates and even tougher losing the finals, but this tournament was eye-opening to the competitiveness and potential within our St. Mary's squad. I am looking forward and beyond thrilled for what the spring holds."

In singles, Kruseman went up against Texas A&M-Kingsville's Valerie Ruiz in the quarterfinals and battled back and forth to prevail 6-3, 4-6, (8). In the semifinals, Kruseman faced the No. 2 seed from Cameron, Zhenia Shviadok. Kruseman put up a tough fight but was unable to get ahead of Shviadok, falling short 6-4, 6-3.

"I can't wait for the spring," Kruseman said upon reflection, "because I know this pain and hurt will only drive all of us to better ourselves and be ready to work come January!"
