#10 Women's Tennis opens spring with convincing victory over UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas — No. 10-ranked St. Mary's Women's Tennis got off to a hot start to the spring semester, cruising past Division I UT Rio Grande Valley 6-1 on Sunday.

The Rattlers (1-0) opened up their first match of the spring by sweeping doubles play, which gave the team a 1-0 lead to start the match. Since the match was played at UT Rio Grande Valley, the scoring was done under D-I rules.

No. 1 doubles tandem Hannah Petersen and Ally Maciel defeated Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva 6-3. No. 2 team Kaylin Kruseman and Tyra Timm won 6-1 over Marine Darzyan and Chloe Leclere, while No. 3's Mariela Sarinana and Camille Clausse-Pujo beat Dominique Ibarra and Amanda Guardia 6-2.

In singles, Clausse-Pujo, a newcomer playing at No. 1, won a thriller 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) over Esparza.

Kruseman cruised in No. 2 action, defeating Darzyan 6-2, 6-3, while Maciel won at No. 3, 6-4, 7-5, over Belyaeva.

Timm was narrowly edged in the No. 4 slot, falling to Ibarra 6-4, 6-1. Petersen and Sarinana closed out the match with 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-0 victories, respectively, in the No. 5 and 6 spots.

The Rattlers will return to action Friday when they host Laredo Community College at 2 p.m. at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex.
