FORT SMITH, Arkansas — UAFS closed out St. Mary's Men's Basketball with a strong finish in a 72-61 defeat Thursday evening.

St. Mary's grabbed a brief 39-38 second-half lead when a Freddie Williams jumper connected with 13:31 remaining. But the Lions went on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to grab a 50-41 lead — an advantage they would not relinquish.

Will Ferguson was one of three Rattlers to score in double figures, leading the way with 16 points to go along with four rebounds and five assists. Freddie Williams chipped in 14 points and five boards, while Yanni Wetzell had 11 points and six rebounds. Robbie Benavides contributed seven rebounds and seven assists.

St. Mary's (8-12, 5-5) trailed by only two points at the half, 32-30. But the Lions jumped out of the gate to start the second frame to pick up their 13th victory of the season. They are 13-9 overall and 6-4 in Heartland play this season.

After shooting nearly 43 percent in the first half, St. Mary's shot a tick below 38 percent (12 of 32) in the second half. Meanwhile, UAFS heated up, shooting 43 percent (12 of 28) after being held to 34-percent shooting in the first half.

The Rattlers will remain on the road, heading to Claremore, Oklahoma to take on Rogers State on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
