Career nights lift Rattlers past Newman in OT

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Career nights from Yanni Wetzell, Robbie Benavides and Dimitri Peterson lifted the St. Mary's Rattlers past Newman, 97-86, in overtime Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena.

Wetzell poured in a career-high 29 points and career-best 12 rebounds, while Benavides added a career-high 22 points to help the Rattlers (7-11 overall) pull above .500 in Heartland Conference play at 5-4. Peterson chipped in a career-high 17 points of his own.

Benavides' 3-pointer with 47 seconds left gave the Rattlers a five-point cushion at 91-86, and he proceeded to ice the game at the free-throw line by making all six attempts following a wild sequence with 33 seconds left. Newman fouled Benavides with 33 ticks remaining, and proceeded to draw consecutive technical fouls, including one that resulted in the Newman head coach getting ejected from the game.

Benavides made the Jets pay by draining all attempts as the Rattlers walked away with a double-digit victory in a game they once trailed 43-36 at halftime.

A strong second half saw the Rattlers lead by five in the final 1:38 of regulation, but Newman finished strong to force OT, including a clutch, equalizing 3-pointer from Daniel Nwosu with six seconds left that tied the game at 77-77.

Will Ferguson scored 11 points in the game for St. Mary's and added seven assists.
