Rattlers stumble to high-powered Buffs

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's was defeated 3-0 by West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Sigma Beta Chi Field in what was the first-ever conference meeting between the two teams.
 
West Texas jumped out to the lead in the first half after executing a set-piece in the 15th minute that beat Rattler goalkeeper Jack Moore who, prior to the goal, made several impressive saves that kept the match scoreless.
 
Despite being outshot 10-2 in the first half, the Rattlers kept within one goal of the Buffs. That was until two second half WTAMU goals secured the victory for the Heartland Conference newcomers.
 
Ryan Hoskins, Michael Lewis, Hayden Hollinger, Alex Gonzalez and Arturo Sanchez each registered one shot apiece while Moore would finish with a match-high seven saves.
 
The loss drops the Rattlers overall record to 2-4-1 with a 1-3-0 conference record. They will return to action on Oct. 29 against Oklahoma Christian in the first match of a four-match road trip.
