SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball wasn't about to let this match slip away.

Once up 2-0 over Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist, the Rattlers suddenly found themselves in a wild, back-and-forth fifth set with the match on the line Saturday afternoon.

But Maddi King took grip of the scene with back-to-back kills to solidify a 26-24 triumph in the decisive set to win the match 3-2 — 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25, 26-24 — before nearly 300 fans at Bill Greehey Arena.

St. Mary's Channing Hankins had a career-high 25 kills, including six in a fifth set that featured 20 ties. She added 17 digs and also hit .305 in the match.

Tarine Grace, whose kills ended the first and second sets, had 17 kills in the match, while King added 13.

Bree Perry, the reigning Heartland Conference Setter of the Week, had a career-high 57 assists.  Amanda Lake led the Rattlers with 20 kills, one away from her career high of 21 set on Thursday.

DBU (3-9, 1-1) put together brilliant third and fourth sets to battle out of a 2-0 hole, and the Patriots weren't showing any signs of slowing down to start the fifth set. But trailing 8-5, St. Mary's kicked into high gear, reeling off five straight points to take a 10-8 lead. The lead wouldn't last long though, as the Patriots rallied to even the score at 10-10. The match saw 15 more ties down the stretch until King helped the Rattlers pull away for the win.

St. Mary's improved to 6-6 on the season and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers will be back in action Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena. The match will be streamed live on the Rattler Network. Tickets are available at StMUtickets.com
