Rattlers hold their own in one-goal loss to #5 Hilltoppers

SAN ANTONIO — Despite a 1-0 loss to the No. 5 team in the country St. Edward's, the St. Mary's Rattlers proved to be worthy adversaries on Saturday night at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
 
The first half saw the Rattlers defense bend, but not break, as they were outshot by the Hilltoppers 4-1 in the first 45 minutes. Entering intermission, StMU managed to keep the match scoreless through solid play from their back line and goal keeper Jack Moore who totaled a match-high four saves.
 
Seven minutes into the second half, the Hilltoppers struck for a goal on a set-piece. The final 38 minutes saw the SEU in search of an insurance goal while the Rattlers were looking for an all-important equalizer.
 
St. Mary's had its chances with Reis Woolley and Juan Sanchez placing shots on goal, but in the end, St. Edward's was able to hold on. Jake Miller, Joaquin Diaz and Rafael Ortiz Salas each tallied a shot of their own.
 
On Sept. 22, the Rattlers will host Eastern New Mexico in the fifth of a six-match homestand with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
