Early Patriot goal dooms Men's Soccer

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Riley Alvey's goal in the 20th minute lifted Dallas Baptist past St. Mary's Men's Soccer, 1-0, Thursday night at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The Rattlers (1-2-1, 0-1-0) couldn't score the equalizer, despite outshooting the Patriots (3-1-1, 1-0-0) by a count of 25-12 and playing the final 19 minutes up a man after DBU drew a red card in the 71st minute.

Strikers Pato Botello and Reis Woolley had several terrific shots, but luck was not on their side as Woolley twice struck the post and Botello hit the post once and the crossbar another time.

Goalkeeper Mauricio Albo got the start in the net for the Rattlers, saving one shot while surrendering the early goal. Jack Moore played the final 45 minutes, collecting two saves.

Botello led the Rattlers with seven shot attempts, followed by Dan Johns with five.

St. Mary's will return to action Saturday, when it hosts St. Edward's in a "Battle of the Saints" match at Sigma Beta Chi FIeld. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
