Strong start not enough as Rattlers drop home opener

SAN ANTONIO — A festive night, which began with the Gold Rush Olympics outside the arena, ended in heartbreaking fashion as the St. Mary's Rattlers fell to St. Edward's 3-2 in the latest installment of "The Battle of the Saints".
 
The Rattlers jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in convincing fashion, taking the second set 25-14, before the Hilltoppers rallied to take the final three.
 
Leading the way for the Rattlers was Tarine Grace who notched a team-high 15 kills and seven blocks. Freshman Shelley Chapron had a stellar game as well, tallying 11 kills, three service aces and seven blocks of her own.
 
Chapron's fellow freshmen, Bree Perry and Amanda Lake had impressive showings as well. Perry posted a match-high 43 assists to go along with nine digs while Lake tallied a match-high 21 digs along with her three assists.
 
St. Mary's will return to the court on Saturday when it hosts Dallas Baptist at Bill Greehey Arena at 12 p.m.
