Three-peat! Women's Tennis blanks SEU, returns to nationals

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — "Three-peat" was the phrase ringing around Rohrbach Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as the St. Mary's Women's Tennis Team would advance out of the South Central Region for the third consecutive season after defeating St. Edward's 5-0.

The victory sends No. 12-ranked St. Mary's (20-3) to Denver, where the Rattlers will compete in the NCAA National Championships for the third straight year.

Ally Maciel and Mariela Sarinana got the momentum going early for St. Mary's with an 8-3 victory over the SEU No. 3's Laura Galvan and Paola Carpio.

Due to rain delays, the match was postponed halfway through doubles play, but the Rattlers were able to maintain their form and complete the doubles sweep. Almost ending simultaneously, Cristina Lopez and Hannah Petersen would defeat Valentina Martinez and Elisa Guillen, 8-6, mere seconds before Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman would notch a win over Anjali Sampath and Marissa Williams by the score of 8-4.

The aforementioned pair of Lopez and Petersen would continue their dominance as the senior Lopez would put together a dominating performance, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Williams to give the Rattlers a commanding 4-0 lead. The race to the finish was near for the Rattlers and that's when Petersen would steal the show.

The freshman finished off the affair with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Carpio at No. 6 much to the delight of the Rattler faithful.

The win proved to be the 20th of the season for the team, which will now travel to Denver to compete in the NCAA National Championships beginning May 18. Last season, St. Mary's advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time after making its first-ever Sweet 16 appearance the year before.
