Russell, Vasquez, Ortiz lift Rattlers to Regional Final

St. Mary’s wins two elimination games, keep season alive

SAN ANTONIO — Down 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth in the first elimination game of the 2016 South Central Regional Tournament against conference rival Lubbock Christian, St. Mary's season was on the line.

Less than a week ago, the Rattlers lost to the Lady Chaps in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship. With the season on the line, freshman Raynelle Nash stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second.

Nash squeezed a single past the shortstop on the third pitch of the at-bat as Hannah Fields scored from second to tie the game. One batter later, Marcela Vasquez ripped a single up the middle, scoring Alena Moreno as the Rattlers completed an improbable comeback to keep their season alive, defeating the Lady Chaps 2-1.

St. Mary's would follow up with an impressive 4-1 victory over Angelo State, avenging their loss the night before to advance to the Regional final against Texas Woman's.

Behind a pair of stellar pitching performances from freshman Jorden Russell and solid defense from Miranda Medina, the Rattlers were able to prolong their season. Russell tossed a pair of complete games, allowing only one earned run on 10 hits in 15 innings pitched.

Alessandra Ortiz logged her first starts of the tournament as she tallied a pair of hits over the two games, including a two-run blast in the fourth inning against Angelo State that locked up the Rattlers trip to the Saturday final.

The Rattlers are set to face Texas Woman's in the championship round tomorrow at the Softball Stadium at 1 p.m., needing to win two games against the Pioneers to punch their ticket to the Super Regional next week.
