Women's Tennis cruises by Newman, improves to 2-0 in Heartland play

DALLAS — In only their second Heartland Conference match of the season, St. Mary's Women's Tennis was able to capture an 8-1 victory over Newman Friday in Dallas.

The win, which saw the Rattlers improve to 12-3, also doubled in keeping their conference record unblemished at 2-0. It was also the Rattlers third straight win.
The Snakes were able to get off to a fast start as they seized all three doubles matches, losing a combined 10 games between them.

Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman defeated Raga/Brill 8-2, before Ally Maciel and Mariela Sarinana won against Tskhakaia/Wise by the same scoreline. Hannah Petersen and Cristina Lopez rounded out doubles play with an 8-6 victory over Bugayenko and Stoianova to give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead.

Heading into singles play with the lead, St. Mary's would only need to win two of six matches to take the win. They would get five, only dropping one singles match on the way to a resounding win.

Kruseman and Tyra Timm, who was inserted for singles, would both only drop two games on their way to singles victories. Kruseman would defeat Stoianova 6-1,6-1 at No. 3 and Timm would win 6-0, 6-2 over Tskhakaiaat No. 4.

Maciel and Sarinana would also capture straight-set wins with the freshman defeating Raga 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 and the latter would defeat Lenthmans 6-3, 6-1.
No. 1 Denton would be involved in a three-set affair in which she lost the first set, but she would battle back and come out victorious against Bugayenko 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The women will hit the courts again Saturday morning as they take on UA Fort Smith at 10 a.m.
