Rattlers homer six times to clinch sweep of Newman

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kansas — The Rattlers homered six times Saturday in a back-and-forth, 14-9 victory over Heartland Conference rival Newman.

The victory completed the series sweep for the Rattlers (23-14, 9-6 in Heartland Conference), who took over sole possession of fourth place in the league standings as they soared back into prime playoff positioning.

Bryce Brandl, Jack Kaiser, Donnie Perez, Angel Vega (twice) and Keith Funk all homered in the game, as St. Mary's also doubled eight times on the day. Remarkably, 14 of the team's 18 hits resulted in extra bases.

Still, that doesn't mean the Rattlers didn't have to fight for the victory throughout.

Newman led 4-1 through three innings, until Vega's two-run home run in the fourth brought the Snakes back within one. It marked the start of a 13-0 run for St. Mary's, highlighted by four-run outbursts in both the sixth and eighth innings as St. Mary's jumped to a 14-4 lead.

The Jets fought back in the ninth, scoring five to cut the lead to 14-9, but the Rattlers' one-time 10-run cushion proved more than enough to prevail.

Four Rattlers posted three hits in the game: Brandle (3 for 6), Matt Smith (3 for 6), Kaiser (3 for 6) and Beau Barnes (3 for 4).

Oscar Sepulveda earned the victory, improving to 2-0 on the season after pitching six strong innings in relief. He struck out five and walked one.

St. Mary's, winners of four straight and eight of its last nine, will take on Heartland Conference-leading St. Edward's next weekend in Austin, Texas. The three-game series gets going with Friday's doubleheader, slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
