St. Edward's takes two from Rattler Baseball to open series

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN — St. Mary's Baseball had the tying runner at third base against St. Edward's on Friday, but the Rattlers were unable to bring in Beau Barnes in the ninth inning as they dropped the nightcap of their doubleheader, 6-5.

The Hilltoppers also won Game 1, 12-4, to take the Day 1 sweep of the three-game series that will conclude Saturday morning in Austin.

St. Mary's led 4-2 through two innings, but St. Edward's put up a seven-spot in the third inning followed by two more in the fourth to lead 11-4 in the eventual 12-4 victory.

Bryce Brandl had two RBI in the game for the Rattlers, and Matt Smith and Jacob Marler added one apiece. Seven Rattlers recorded a hit in the game.

A back-and-forth Game 2 saw St. Mary's pull ahead 2-0 in the second following Donnie Perez's two-run home run. But the Hilltoppers evened the score 2-2 in the bottom of the frame.

The Rattlers (23-16, 9-8 in Heartland Conference) went up 3-2 in the third on Matt Smith's RBI double that scored Bryce Brandl, but the lead wouldn't last long.

St. Edward's took the lead for good in a three-run fifth inning, taking a 6-3 lead that would hold the rest of the way. St. Mary's struck with one run in the sixth and another in the ninth as the Rattlers had the tying run on third base. But St. Mary's could not bring Barnes home as the Hilltoppers prevailed 6-5.
