Baseball survives Newman to pick up 2 crucial Heartland victories

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kansas — St. Mary's Baseball soared up the Heartland Conference standings Friday with a pair of nail-biting victories over the Newman Jets.

St. Mary's snuck past Newman 8-7 in the opener before surviving a 10-9 victory in the nightcap to move into a tie for fourth place with the Jets in the league standings. The Rattlers also own the tiebreaker by virtue of assuring a series victory over the Jets, which could pay dividends down the road.

The teams will finish the series with Saturday's Game 3 finale, scheduled for 3 p.m.

On Friday, the Rattlers used a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and seventh to turn a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 advantage. It proved to be just enough of a lead for the Rattlers (22-14), who watched the Jets score twice in the bottom of the seventh before falling short of a comeback.

Game 2 saw the teams exchange blow after blow in a high-scoring, highlight-filled affair.

St. Mary's grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first following an RBI double from Bryce Brandl and a two-run home run from Matt Smith, but the lead would prove short-lived as the Jets (22-12) struck right back in the second.

Newman scored five runs to turn the momentum firmly in their favor, but the Jets' own lead of 5-3 proved equally short-lived as St. Mary's scored once in the third before tacking on five more runs in the fourth to lead 9-5.

Newman would continue to make things interesting, however, score two in the fourth and two more in the seventh to even the score at 9-9. But St. Mary's offense immediately went back to work, as Smith's RBI single in the eighth put the Rattlers up for good, 10-9.

Hayden Hibler picked up the Game 2 victory to improve to 2-1 on the season, striking out four over three innings of relief. Reliever Nick Garcia got the victory in the opener, improving to 3-0 on the year.

Brandi led the way at the plate, totaling five RBI over nine at-bats over the two games. Smith added four RBI.
