Women's Tennis blanks DBU, heads to Heartland title match

DALLAS — St. Mary's Women's Tennis made it four straight appearances in the Heartland Conference tournament final as they cruised to a 5-0 victory over Dallas Baptist on Friday on the campus of SMU. 

The No. 12-ranked Rattlers were able to capture the victory as they look to claim their fourth Heartland Conference Tournament championship in five years. The win was the seventh shutout win on the season for the Snakes and they now have only lost seven individual matches in their last nine times out. 

Cristina Lopez and Hannah Peterson got proceedings kicked off when they were able to take an 8-1 victory over the team of Richter and Slaughter at No. 2. Ally Maciel and Mariela Sarinana were able to continue the trend as they won at No. 3 against the DBU team of Madeline Kaufman and Bianca Tijerina. 

With the match standing at 2-0 for the Rattlers, Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman squeezed out the 8-6 victory against the No. 1 team of Ana Marija Banic and Maria Fernandez 8-6. Needing only two victories in singles to close out the match, Cristina Lopez would defeat Slaughter by a score of 6-0, 6-2 to leave the match up to her doubles partner, Hannah Petersen. The freshman continued her winning form from doubles as she was able to close out the match, defeating Bianca Tijerina 6-1, 6-1.

The win marked the 18th on the year for the Rattlers and now their record stands at 18-3. They will look to claim the Heartland Conference Tournament title against St. Edward's at noon Saturday.
