Johnson's walk-off helps Rattlers split with Oklahoma Christian

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Baseball split a doubleheader Friday against Oklahoma Christian, winning the first affair 5-4 and dropping the nightcap, 8-4.

The Rattlers were able to take the lead early in the second inning of Game 1, and tacked on some insurance in the third. Beau Barnes paced the Rattlers with three RBI on two hits.

The Eagles (25-16, 14-6) were able to claw their way back into the game with a three-run fifth inning, but not before the Rattlers put up two runs of their own heading into the final two innings. Trent Rousseau (2-1) would come in to relieve starter Chris Jones and pitch 1 1/3 scoreless shutout innings to record the victory.

Zach Johnson, who accounted for the other two RBI, would ultimately become the hero as he stepped up with the bases loaded in the seventh. The Austin, Texas native was able to find the gap in the five-man infield to score Matt Smith and win the game for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers were able to sustain the momentum heading into the second matchup, behind the stellar pitching of Oscar Sepulveda (2-2). The junior held the Eagles to one run in five innings before the Eagles exploded in the fifth inning for four runs.

St. Mary's would try to mount a comeback as Jack Kaiser added two RBI to his account with a bases-clearing double in the seventh, but OC's pitching from starter Dylan Fazekas (3-3) and closer Garett Hill proved to be too much for the Snakes to handle.

The Rattlers' record now stands at 25-18 and 10-10 in Heartland Conference play. They stand one game back of the last postseason position, trailing Newman by one game for the fourth slot.

The rubber match between the two sides will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dickson Stadium as both sides will look to cement their place in the Heartland Conference postseason tournament.
