@StMUsoftball outlast, blow past Dustdevils

SAN ANTONIO — How does one celebrate a birthday? If you're Hannah Michel, you help the St. Mary's Rattlers secure the outright Heartland Conference regular season title with a pair of victories over Texas A&M International on Friday night at the Softball Stadium inside the Park at St. Mary's.

Michel continued her breakout season with a five-RBI outburst in game two as she went 2-for-4 with two home runs. Her two-run homer in the third capped a three-run inning for the Rattlers as they broke out to a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, clinging to a one-run lead, Michel erased any hope for a Dustdevil comeback as she crushed a three-run blast, giving the Rattlers a 6-2 victory.

Hope Russell picked up the win as she tossed 5.1 innings as she scattered five hits and one earned run with a pair of strikeouts. Her record improves to 7-4 this season with the victory.

An excellent performance at the plate by Hannah Fields helped set the tone for the Rattlers as she went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

The drama of the nightcap paled in comparison to the series opener that went 10 innings.

St. Mary's trailed early after TAMIU struck for a run in the opening frame. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Sydney Wellmann collected an RBI after being hit by a pitch. That would be the first of two times Wellmann would get plunked as she would end the day as the single season record holder for most HBP in a season.

A 10th inning sacrifice fly from Olivia Van Hook ended the extra inning affair as St. Mary's picked up its seventh straight victory.

Kristal Salinas went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Raynelle Nash added two hits of her own with an RBI and a walk.

Ashley Mills came in for relief, tossing 3.2 innings as she picked up her 12th straight victory of the season, remaining undefeated in her first season as a Rattler.

The regular season concludes tomorrow as both the Rattlers and Dustdevils will do battle inside the Park at St. Mary's. Before the game, the four Rattler seniors will be honored on their senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
