Women's Tennis wraps up week with victory over No. 17 Cameron

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — In a week that pitted them against two regional rivals, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team was able to defeat Tarleton State and Cameron, 8-1 and 5-1, respectively.

The results gave the women their 15th and 16th wins of the season and also represented their seventh straight victory. The Rattlers have managed to lose a total of seven matches in this current seven-match win streak and have also seen off two top-20 ranked opponents.

Starting with Tarleton State on Friday, Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman started off proceedings with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Cristina Lopez and Hannah Petersen were right behind at No. 2 with an 8-4 win, before Ally Maciel and Mariela Sarinana prevailed with an 8-3 victory of their own to give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead overall.

St. Mary's went on to capture five of six singles victories, highlighted by Petersen's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Porter to give the Snakes the 8-1 victory.

Now the attention turned to arguably one of the toughest tests of the season in Cameron. With regional seeding implications on the line, the women came out to take an early 2-1 overall lead with Lopez and Petersen winning at No. 2, and Maciel and Sarinana taking the match at No. 3, both by the score of 8-4.

With the lead heading into doubles, the Rattlers would only need three singles victories to capture the important victory — and they did just that.

The freshman Petersen and Tyra Timm, who was inserted into the lineup for singles, would both record 6-2, 6-2 victories at No. 6 and No. 4, respectively. That would mean only one match was needed to take the win and that win would come. No. 2 Lopez would also record a victory on the day with her 6-3, 6-1 victory, giving the Rattlers the win.

The triumph gives the Rattlers a 16-3 record as they head into yet another very important match when they take on St. Edward's on Thursday. The match will serve as Senior Day as well when the team will honor the four seniors: Cristina Lopez, Jamie Lee Denton, Kerry Wiegand and Joanie Bryant. The match is set for 11 a.m. at Rohrbach Stadium.
