Twice is nice: @StMUsoftball down LCU with pair of walk-offs

SAN ANTONIO — The top two teams of the Heartland Conference tangled in a pair of classic confrontations as the Rattlers and the Lady Chaps took the field at the Softball Stadium Friday night. A total of 20 innings were played between the two teams as St. Mary's came away with two come-from-behind victories.

In game one, the Rattlers battled from a pair of deficits, only to respond each time. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Hannah Michel sparked the Rattlers with an RBI-double. Later in the inning, Michel would score the tying run on a pinch-hit single by Alessandra Ortiz.

As the game moved into extras, both teams struggled to find offense. The deadlock was broken in the ninth as the Lady Chaps tacked on the go-ahead run.

Down to their final out, the Rattlers turned to Olivia Van Hook. The junior delivered on an RBI-double that scored Raynelle Nash, tying the game at 3-3.

The stage was set for freshman Kristal Salinas in the 13th inning as she drilled a shot to left scoring Nash from third, ending the three and a half hour marathon.

Game one was a pitchers duel as the starting pitchers went the distance — and then some. The Rattlers' Jorden Russell came away victorious after a stellar 13 inning performance as she retired 39 of the 52 batters she faced, allowing only three earned runs.

Marcela Vasquez, Hannah Fields, Nash and Michel each tallied a pair of hits for the home team as they ended Lubbock Christian's 17-game winning-streak.

In the nightcap, both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings. The Lady Chaps struck first in the sixth as they took a 1-0 lead into the seventh.

Once again, LCU was two outs away from sealing a victory on the road and once again, Ortiz rose to the occasion for the Rattlers as she drilled the game-winning run with a single to left. She finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with the team's only two RBI.

Kristi Rangel was superb through six innings as she struck out three, while not allowing a walk. Picking up the victory was Ashley Mills as she improved to 9-0 on the season by producing three groundouts in her lone inning of work.

The Rattlers and Lady Chaps will conclude their three-game series on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at the Softball Stadium. Before the game, the St. Mary's 1986 NAIA Softball National Champions will be recognized in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the university's first-ever national championship.
