Extra-base hits power Rattlers to Day 1 sweep of UTPB

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Baseball came out firing Friday to take Games 1 and 2 of a three-game series against Texas-Permian Basin.

The Rattlers totaled six doubles, four home runs and two triples to prevail 5-4 and 9-3 over the Falcons at Dickson Stadium. The series will conclude with Saturday's 2 p.m. finale.

Matt Smith and Donnie Perez singlehandedly accounted for nearly half the Rattlers' extra-base hits, as Smith hit two triples in the nightcap and doubled once in the opener, and Perez blasted two home runs in Game 2 to help the Rattlers (19-13, 6-5) cruise to victory.

Powered by a solo shot in the second and a three-run shot in the fifth inning of Game 2, Perez led the Rattlers with four RBI. Bryce Brandl added three RBI on a three-run homer in Game 1, while Smith sprinkled three RBI over the two games as well. Slugger Jack Kaiser also homered on the day for the Rattlers, who fell behind 4-0 early in Game 1 and 1-0 in the first inning of Game 2.

Nick Garcia pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief to pick up the Game 2 victory, his second of the season. He struck out three, walked one and yielded just a single hit during his time on the mound. Trent Rousseau picked up the victory in the opener, improving to 1-1 on the season after going 1 2/3 innings.
