Rattlers respond, finish strong against Angelo State

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's returned home on Wednesday as it split a non conference doubleheader against Angelo State at the Softball Stadium. The Rattlers bounced back in the nightcap with a 7-1 victory after dropping the opening game 9-1.

The Rattlers offense struggled, as they were held scoreless in the final six innings of the opening contest with their only run coming courtesy of an RBI single to left field from Marcela Vasquez in the bottom of the first.

Game two was a different story as the Ratters asserted their dominance behind a complete game outing from Jorden Russell who struck out five and forced 12 groundouts, improving her record to 11-3.

In each of the first five innings, StMU scored at least one run as the offense was sparked by Hannah Fields as she went 2-for-2 at the plate with two-RBI and a walk.

Alena Moreno set the tone for the nightcap as she connected on a leadoff triple. Moreno would score the following at-bat after Hannah Michel grounded out to second.

Brenham, Texas natives Sydney Wellmann and Olivia Van Hook contributed well at the plate as Wellmann finished 1-for-4 with two RBI with Van Hook going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Friday, the Rattlers will resume conference play as they will host Lubbock Christian in a three-game weekend series that begins with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at the Softball Stadium.
