@StMUsoftball survives 7th-inning scare to edge St. Edward's

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 9-ranked St. Mary's Softball got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 4-3 victory over rival St. Edward's on Thursday.

The Hilltoppers cut a two-run gap to one in the seventh, but couldn't even the score as Jorden Russell picked up the victory in relief to help St. Mary's (28-6, 14-1) clinch the series, 2-1.

Marcela Vasquez hit a game-tying, two-run home run in the fourth, and Raynelle Nash drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth on a double to left-center field. In the top of the seventh, Alena Moreno drove in what would prove to be the winning run on an RBI double to center field.

Bouncing back after seeing their 19-game winning streak snapped in a no-hit loss to St. Edward's on Wednesday, the Rattlers' offense was again limited by St. Edward's ace Lauren Slatten, who held StMU to just three hits.

But St. Mary's offensive efficiency was paramount, as the Rattlers capitalized on little moments that added up to big keys to victory.

Just before Vasquez homered, slugger Sydney Wellmann struck out. But she advanced to first base on a passed ball, setting up Vasquez's shot to be an equalizer as opposed to a solo homer that left the Rattlers still behind.

Then, in the sixth, a leadoff walk by Hannah Michel produced the go-ahead run, as Michel came around to score on Nash's double moments later.

The same held true in the seventh, when Hannah Fields reached on an error, and came around to score on Moreno's RBI double.

Russell improved to 10-3 on the season after picking up her second victory in as many days against the Hilltoppers. She struck out four and allowed five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

St. Mary's will be back in action Wednesday for a nonconference doubleheader against Angelo State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
