Rattlers' win streak ends at 19 with split at St. Edward’s

AUSTIN, Texas — A pair of pitching gems highlighted the latest Battle of the Saints matchups between the Rattlers and Hilltoppers at Diane Daniels Field as St. Mary's and St. Edward's split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

The Rattlers took the series opener 7-0, extending their win-streak to 19 games, before the Toppers responded with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

Jorden Russell (9-3), who tossed a complete game, 2-hit shutout in a near perfect effort, retiring 20 of the 22 batters she faced, led St. Mary's to victory in the opening contest as Miranda Medina lifted the offense with a game clinching seventh inning grand slam.

Both teams were scoreless throughout the first five innings until a sixth inning Marcela Vasquez RBI single opened up the scoring.

Going 2-for-4 from the plate, Hannah Michel scored a pair of runs for the Rattlers while Raynelle Nash filled the score sheet, going 1-for-1 with an RBI, a run scored and a pair of walks drawn.

In the nightcap, Hope Russell and the Rattlers ended up on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel that saw the usually high octane Rattler offense held without a hit.

Hope Russell surrendered only a pair of hits to the Hilltoppers as she picked up her first loss of the season, dropping her record to 3-1.

The Snakes and the Toppers will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at noon.
