Moreno, Fields clutch as @StMUsoftball take two from Eagles

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Fields deposited a two-RBI double to left field, pushing the Rattlers' series-opener against Oklahoma Christian into extra innings.

In the eleventh, Alena Moreno punctuated the Rattlers 4-3, come-from-behind victory over the Eagles with an RBI single. The Rattlers followed their game one win by defeating OC 6-1 in the nightcap at the Softball Stadium inside the Park at St. Mary's.

Moreno tallied two hits with an RBI while Fields lone base hit came on the game tying double in the seventh.

Freshman Kristal Salinas was a catalyst for what was an unusually quiet Rattlers offense by going 2-for-4 from the plate with two doubles and scoring a pair of runs.

Ashley Mills collected her third victory in as many games as she allowed only one run while striking out eight in six innings of work as she improves her record to 8-0 on the season. Mills was untouchable as the game headed into its later stages retiring 10 straight batters from the seventh inning through the tenth.

The nightcap was a different story as the Rattlers offense found its rhythm early. Responding to a run scored by the Eagles in the second inning, the Rattlers erupted for four runs behind an RBI single from Miranda Medina and sacrifice flies from Fields and Moreno.

An RBI single from Marcela Vasquez in the fifth inning and a Moreno double in the sixth capped the Rattlers' 17th straight win as they remain undefeated in Heartland Conference play.

Jorden Russell threw for a complete game allowing only one run on three hits as she struck out four Eagles for her eighth win of the season, improving her record to 8-5.

St. Mary's will look complete the three-game sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at the Softball Stadium with first pitch scheduled for noon.
