Rattler comeback falls short in Heartland opener

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's Rattlers dropped their Heartland conference season opener today against the Rogers State University Hillcats 10-7. With the loss, the Rattlers fall to 12-9 while the Hillcats improved to 14-4.

Hayden Hibler (1-2) struggled in the start for the Rattlers and only lasted 2.2 innings. On the other side of things Josh Eclavea (4-0) earned the win for the Hillcats after throwing 2.1 innings.

The game was a resilient effort out of St. Mary's who trailed 7-0 in the middle of the third inning. However, the Rattlers bounced back and managed to put up a six-run rally in the bottom of the third that was capped off by a Matt Smith two-RBI triple.

Angel Vega also added to his power numbers with a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning.

Rogers State got a big day out of Chris Miguel who went 4-5 with a double, homer, four-RBI and two runs scored. The Hillcats took the lead with the third batter of the game and held it throughout.

The series will conclude on Sunday with a doubleheader set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Tune in to RattlerAthletics.com/live to watch.
