Lions top @StMUWBB at the buzzer

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Arysia Porter's last-second, game-tying 3-pointer for St. Mary's on Saturday was outdone only by a buzzer-beating layup from UA Fort Smith's Brittany Holbert.

Hilbert's go-ahead basket gave UAFS a 75-73 victory over the St. Mary's women's basketball team at the Stubblefield Center, erasing a one-time 14-point Rattler lead.

Dezirae Elias led the Rattlers with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Porter added 19 points, including her 3-pointer with five seconds remaining that evened the score at 73-73.

Kiara Etheridge pitched in 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists, falling just short of her 11th double-double of the season.

The Rattlers (14-7, 8-5) were in control early, leading by double figures in the first half and taking a 35-28 lead into halftime that they would extend to 14 midway through the third quarter.

But they could not hold off the Lions (16-6, 9-4).

UAFS forced St. Mary's into nine turnovers over the final 17 minutes, squashing a Rattler attack that had been cruising up to that point. St. Mary's had 26 turnovers for the game, which the Lions cashed in for 34 points.

Defensively, St. Mary's held UAFS to 35.4-percent shooting for the game, though the Lions heated up in the second half after shooting just 29 percent (9 of 31) in the first half. UAFS bounced back over the final two quarters to shoot 41.2 percent to mount the comeback.

St. Mary's will be back in action next week when the Rattlers host St. Edward's in a "Battle of the Saints" matchup Thursday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
