Young Rattlers shine in wins against LCU, TAMUC

SAN ANTONIO — On the 16th pitch of her fifth inning at-bat, sophomore Alessandra Ortiz blasted a three-run shot to right center field, all but assuring a Rattler victory in the nightcap on Day 2 of the St. Mary's NCAA D-II College Classic. Ortiz (Uvalde, Texas) and the Rattlers would not be denied on this day as they improved to 3-0 on the young season.
 
Jorden Russell (Fr, Leander, Texas) put the finishing touches on the Rattlers' dominating day with her first ever career hit, a walk-off grand slam in the sixth inning, as St. Mary's won 12-2 against Texas A&M-Commerce.
 
Russell was also the winning pitcher against the Lions, throwing six complete innings, allowing only two runs on five hits, striking out six in her first ever start.
 
Fellow freshman Raynelle Nash (Fr., San Antonio) notched two hits, two RBIs and scored a pair of runs in the contest.
 
The first game featured the Rattlers against Lubbock Christian where Kristi Rangel (So., Kingsville, Texas) picked up the win, tossing four complete innings while Ashley Mills (Jr., Thornton, Texas) got the save after throwing three no-hit innings.
 
New Rattler, Olivia Van Hook (Jr., Brenham, Texas) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the 5-1 victory.
 
St. Mary's will close out the weekend with two games, first against East Central and then a rematch from last year's South Central Super Regional against Tarleton State.
