Rattlers run out of gas against Rogers State

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Rogers State earned a wire-to-wire 74-57 victory over St. Mary's Men's Basketball on Thursday, using a hot touch from the field to fend off the Rattlers.

The Hillcats shot 64.1 percent from the floor (25 of 39), including shooting over 70 percent (12 of 17) in the second half.

Yanni Wetzell and Bryce Smith led the Rattlers' attack with 10 points apiece. Wetzell added seven rebounds to lead the team.

Rogers State opened up a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but the Rattlers went on a 12-2 run to even the score at 20-20 with just over eight minutes left in the frame. But RSU quickly regained a seven-point advantage, which it maintained at the break with a 37-30 lead.

A similar theme emerged in the second half, where St. Mary's fell behind 11, 46-35 in the early goings. As was the case earlier, the Rattlers climbed out with an 11-4 run to close the gap to four at 50-46 when Kriston Minor sank a jumper in the paint with 10:46 remaining.

But the Rattlers might have run out of gas, as the Hillcats opened up a game-high 19-point lead, 67-48, six minutes later.

St. Mary's forced Rogers State into 19 turnovers compared to the Rattlers' 18, but it was Rogers State who was able to make the most of the other team's miscues. The Hillcats outscored the Snakes 24-13 off turnovers, and also won the battle down low, outscoring StMU 44-18 in the paint.

The Rattlers will try to shake off the loss when they travel to take on UA Fort Smith this weekend. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. Saturday in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
