Baseball's rallies fall short against TAMUK

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Despite two late-game rallies, St. Mary's Baseball fell just short twice Saturday, dropping a twin bill against Texas A&M-Kingsville by the scores 8-7 and 8-6.

Donnie Perez's three-run shot in the seventh inning of the opener spurred a four-run inning that saw St. Mary's erase a four-run deficit and even the score at 7-7. But the Javelinas answered in extras, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to prevail 8-7.

It was a similar theme in Game 2, when the Rattlers trailed 6-1 before catching fire. Zach Johnson's two-RBI single and Perez's RBI sacrifice fly brought in three runs in the fifth, and Matt Smith drove in two more on a two-RBI double in the sixth to pull the Rattlers within one at 7-6.

But TAMUK extended the lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the frame, and retired St. Mary's batters in order in the seventh to end the game.

Perez had a monster day in defeat, driving in four runs on a 3-for-4 Game 1 that featured two home runs. He tacked on a fifth RBI in the nightcap.

Johnson and Smith had two RBI apiece in Game 2 to lead the charge.

On the mound, Hayden Hibler made his first start, fanning eight over 5 2/3 innings in the opener. He earned a no-decision.

St. Mary's will return to action Friday, when they host the start of a four-game series against the College of the Southwest. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
