TAMUK climbs back late to top Rattlers

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's lost a wild one Thursday evening, falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville 10-7 at Dickson Stadium.

The game featured nine errors, eight pitchers and saw the Rattlers (8-6) and Javelinas (5-3) trade punches throughout huge swings of momentum.

St. Mary's led 7-4 after four innings, but watched the Javelinas whittle away at the deficit the rest of the way before eventually pulling ahead 8-7 in the eighth and 10-7 in the ninth.

The Javelinas, who led 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, saw St. Mary's wipe away the early lead with a five-run second inning. The Rattlers tacked on two more in the fourth, but would not score again.

TAMUK, meanwhile, struck once in the fifth, scored twice in the sixth, added a go-ahead run in the eighth and scored two more insurance runs in the ninth.

Zach Johnson, Donnie Perez and Beau Barnes all had multi-hit games for the Rattlers, with Perez representing the lone home run on a wind-aided fly ball to right field that lifted past the fence for St. Mary's first run in the second inning. Jack Kaiser, Angel Vega, Perez and Barnes all had one RBI apiece in the loss.

Rattler reliever Kyler Lambert gave a strong 2 2/3 innings, fanning four and walking two while yielding one run. Trent Rousseau was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season.

St. Mary's and Texas A&M-Kingsville will meet back up Saturday for a doubleheader in Kingsville, Texas.
