Women's Tennis claws out tough 5-4 win over Tyler J.C.

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — In arguably their toughest challenge since the opening day of the season, St. Mary's Women's Tennis squeezed out a narrow 5-4 victory over Tyler Junior College on Friday morning.

The Rattlers (5-1) managed to keep their undefeated home record intact and remained unbeaten in their last five matches. The Apaches of the NJCAA were no easy task as they provided a scare for St. Mary's.

The Apaches captured the match at No. 1 doubles, but the Gold and Blue would fight back to take the 2-1 advantage into singles play. Hannah Petersen and Cristina Lopez would capture the Rattlers' first point of the day in their win at No. 2 doubles, 9-7, over Klocova and Walker. At the No. 3 spot, Kerry Wiegand, a former Apache herself, and partner Tyra Timm would also go the distance, but eventually pulled out a 9-7 over Tendero and Moore.

With the lead, the sides would split the singles matches giving the Rattlers the victory on the day. The Rattlers would drop matches at No. 1, 3, and 4 singles, but managed to recover at the remaining lines.

Mariela Sarinana, who seized one of those wins, impressively defeated Antria Compton at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2, Cristina Lopez also won in straight sets over Elizabeth Bagrbach, 6-2, 6-2.

However, at No. 5, Hannah Petersen would find herself in a hole after dropping her first set 2-6 to Michelle Walker. The freshman would battle back to take the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 and then would win the third set tiebreaker in dominant fashion, 10-1.

The win marks the Rattlers' fifth and is their second of five straight at home before starting conference play on March 11. The women will return to Rohrbach Stadium on Feb. 27 when they take on Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m.
