Rattlers split final day of action against OLLU

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's Rattlers baseball team split games with Our Lady of the Lake in the final day of a three-game series Saturday, as the Rattlers won the first game, 10-6, before the Saints took the nightcap, 8-3.

In all, the split amounts to the Rattlers landing with an 8-5 record on the young season.

The first game saw the Rattlers and winning pitcher Cole Hybner (2-1) battling back after a rough start to the game as OLLU jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first and a 4-2 lead in the third. But the Rattlers were able to gain the lead in the third inning and never looked back as they reached double figures for the sixth time this season, improving to 5-1 when they score 10-plus runs.

Jack Kaiser had a big game at the plate by going 3 for 4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Angel Vega followed him up with a 3-for-4 game as well with two RBI. The two players continue to battle back and forth for the RBI and home run lead on the team; Kaiser currently leads in both departments 22-15 and 4-3, respectively.

Kaiser had massive numbers all weekend long. He ended up going 7 for 14 with seven RBI, seven runs and a homer over the course of the three-game set.

Nick Garcia also came in for relief and picked his first save on the year with a strikeout, while Saints starter Jordan Hackett (2-1) took his first loss on the season.

The second game saw the Saints winning 8-3 as they capitalized on Rattler mistakes. Jaryd Hodgson (1-2) had a rough start after yielding five early runs, four of which were earned in three innings pitched. Four of the eight runs surrenders by the Rattlers in this game were unearned.

The Rattler bats also cooled off as they stranded 14 baserunners throughout the course of the ballgame. Gabriel Raygoza (1-2) pitched the best out of any Saints pitcher all weekend as he picked up his first win on the season by working 7 1/3 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on nine hits.

The bright spot for the Rattlers was the relief effort from Hayden Hibler. Hibler, a transfer student from North Texas Central College, made his St. Mary's debut in relief of Hodgson. Hibler retired the first 12 batters he faced. While he ended up allotting three runs in the final inning he worked, none of those runs were earned. Hibler also struck out six of the first 13 batters he faced.

The Rattlers will be back in action on Thursday when they take on the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas at 6 p.m. at Dickson Stadium. The Rattlers went 2-0 against the Javelinas last season. Be sure to tune in to RattlerAthletics.com in order to catch all the action.
