@StMUsoftball finish strong on Day 1 of Rattler Invitational

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's began the Rattler Invitational on Friday, splitting a pair of games at the Softball Stadium in The Park at St. Mary's, dropping the opening contest to Central Oklahoma 5-3 before winning the nightcap against No. 10 Tarleton State 8-3.

In game one, the high-octane Rattlers' offense was held scoreless through the first six innings as the Snakes trailed the Bronchos 5-0. Down to their final three outs, the Rattlers rallied, beginning with a Kristal Salinas double down the right field line that scored the team's first run of the game.

The ensuing at-bat saw, Hannah Fields slap a single to left field to bring the Rattlers within three.  Two batters later, StMU scored another run before the comeback fell short.

Fields finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI while National Player of the Week Hannah Michel went 2-for-4 with two singles.

Game two on Friday featured the Rattlers avenging their loss to the Texanns earlier in the month as they handed Tarleton State their second fourth loss of the season.

The Texanns struck first, scoring on an error in the top of the first inning. That would be the only time Tarleton State would be in the lead as St. Mary's responded with a four-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning.

After Raynelle Nash ripped an RBI single to right that tied the game at 1-1, Jennifer Hernandez crushed the third pitch of her at-bat over the left field wall for a three-run homer that pushed the Rattlers ahead 4-1.

Two innings later an Alena Moreno double brought in a pair of runs adding to the Rattlers' advantage.

Moreno finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored while Olivia Van Hook went 2-for-4 while scoring a run as well.

Hope Russell picked up the victory for the Rattlers as she threw five complete, allowing only two earned runs. The win improves her record to 2-1 on the season.

The St. Mary's Rattler Invitational will continue on Saturday as the Rattlers host conference foes Texas A&M International and Oklahoma Christian.
