Second-half woes doom Rattlers against TAMIU

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Basketball couldn't overcome a poor start to the second half, where a one-point halftime deficit swelled to 22 in an eventual 72-62 loss to Texas A&M International.

The Rattlers (9-16, 5-12) did make a late push, cutting the deficit to nine in the final minutes following an energized showing from its bench, but were unable to get any closer before a crowd of 200 at Bill Greehey Arena.

Trailing 27-26 at the half, the Rattlers scored just two points over the first nine minutes of the second half as TAMIU went on a 19-0 run to effectively ice the game with a 50-28 lead midway through the second half.

Four Rattlers scored in double figures, led by Yanni Wetzell's 16 points and team-high eight rebounds. Lachie Woodhill and Kriston Minor added 12 points apiece, while Dimitri Peterson chipped in 11 off the bench.

After holding TAMIU (16-9, 11-6) to 34.6-percent shooting from the floor in the first half, the Rattlers couldn't keep the Dustdevils' offense at bay in the second half, where TAMIU shot 57.9 percent.

St. Mary's will close out the home portion of its regular season against Dallas Baptist on Monday night, when they'll tip off at 6 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
