Women's Tennis victorious against UIW, TAMUK

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 11-ranked St. Mary's Women's Tennis continued its winning ways this weekend as they improved their record to 4-1 after victories over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

After taking on Trinity and UTSA last week, the Rattlers took on another crosstown rival in the form of the Cardinals of UIW. The Rattlers would only drop three matches on their way to an impressive 5-2 victory.

The win was highlighted by five singles victories after St. Mary's uncharacteristically dropped the doubles point when they suffered setbacks in No. 2 and 3 doubles.

The women would rally despite the disadvantage and take the overall victory.

Kaylin Kruseman would be the standout on the day with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 over Victoria Kareh to add to her No. 1 doubles victory.

No. 4 Ally Maciel, No. 5 Tyra Timm, and No. 6 Mariela Sarinana would all roll to straight-set victories in their respective singles matchups. Maciel defeated Taryn Strahl 6-0, 7-6; Timm followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sarah Savedra; and Sarinana would complete her singles victory against Maria Batchinsky, 6-3, 6-2.
Cristina Lopez would have a noticeably tougher battle at No. 2 as she battled her way to a three-set 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win against Matea Zemunik.

The win would put the Rattlers in a position to improve to 4-1 on Saturday as the quick turnaround would match them up with the Javelinas of TAMUK on Sunday.

The Gold and Blue got off to an early advantage as they took two of three of the doubles points up for grabs. Jamie Lee Denton and Kruseman defeated the team of Nadia Grlj/Martina Urrutia of TAMUK 8-2 before Kerry Wiegand and Tyra Timm impressively defeated Madi Gomez/Erika Larrea, 8-0 heading into singles play.

Leading 2-1, The Rattlers capped the victory with wins in five of the six singles matches.

In No. 1 singles, Lopez would not lose a game on the way to victory over TAMUK's Herrera.

Denton would add to her doubles triumph as the No. 2 would win 6-4, 6-1 over Marija Dimitrovska and Maciel would follow with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Nadia Grlj.

Timm and Sarinana would round out the team victory for the Rattlers with both winning 6-1, 6-0 over Urrutia and Gomez, respectively.

St. Mary's now improves their record to 4-1 on the year and will face Tyler Junior College on Friday, Feb. 19.
