Rattlers split Day 2 of West Texas A&M Invitational

CANYON, Texas — Once again, the Rattler bats were out in full force in Day 2 of the West Texas A&M Invitational. St. Mary's split its pair of games against Cameron and West Texas A&M

Game 1 of the day saw Jennifer Hernandez unload on Cameron as she doubled, homered and drove in five RBI as No. 12-ranked St. Mary's Softball thumped the Aggies 8-4.

Tied 4-4 in the fourth inning Saturday, Hernandez drove in two runs on a double to left field to put the Rattlers (7-2) up for good after seeing an early 4-1 lead erased. It was also Hernandez who put the Snakes in the lead early, blasting a three-run shot for a 3-0 lead in the first.

Hannah Michel, Raynelle Nash and Olivia Van Hook all drove in one RBI apiece as the Rattlers' offense continued to click.

Ashley Mills picked up her second victory of the season, going five shutout innings in relief after inheriting a 4-4 game in the third inning. She struck out three, walked two and scattered two hits over the appearance.

The nightcap saw a wild contest between St. Mary's and host West Texas A&M that saw a combined 22 runs scored on 25 hits between the two teams as the Lady Buffs were able come from behind and defeat the Rattlers 15-7.

St. Mary's offense continued to roll as it produced six runs through the first four innings. The Lady Buffs responded by scoring six runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.

An Alena Moreno groundout scored the tying run in the top of the fifth. But that would be as close as the Snakes would get as the Lady Buffs would erupt for seven more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Despite the loss, the Rattlers have now made it five straight games in which they score at least seven runs.

Van Hook brought in three runs on three hits, including a home run to center in the third while Moreno, Hernandez, Nash and Michel registered an RBI each.

Sunday, the Rattlers will play two more games at Schaeffer Park beginning at 10:45 a.m. when they take on Metropolitan State.
