Strong start for Softball in Day 1 of West Texas Invitational

By Chad Peters and Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CANYON, Texas — It took a while for St. Mary's bats to get going Friday, but once they did there wasn't much stopping them.

No. 12-ranked St. Mary's Softball totaled seven runs over the fourth and fifth innings, overcoming an early three-run deficit to beat Texas Woman's 7-6 on the opening day of the West Texas Invitational.

St. Mary's (5-2) held a healthy 7-3 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Pioneers (5-7) threatened by scoring three runs before St. Mary's could get out of the frame on a groundout to second.

Leading 7-6 in the seventh, St. Mary's again had to get out of a jam, as the Pioneers put runners on second and third with no outs following an infield error. A fielder's choice produced a play at the plate for the first out, and the Rattlers got out of the inning with a fly out and a groundout to end the game.

Jorden Russell picked up the victory, striking out three and scattering eight hits over six innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. Ashley Mills pitched the final inning, yielding two hits before putting it away to earn her second save of the season.

Jennifer Hernandez led the Rattlers' attack with two RBI on a 1-for-3 outing that saw her pound a triple for her first hit of the season. Raynelle Nash, Olivia Van Hook, Russell and Jourdan Alvarez also produced RBI at-bats in the game.

In the nightcap against the Midwestern State Mustangs, the Rattlers picked up right where they left off, erupting for six runs in the second. Sydney Wellmann came up huge going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Not to be outdone, for the second time in three games, Hannah Michel tallied four RBI as she went 2-for-2 from the plate.

Freshman, Kristal Salinas collected her first career hit and RBI against the Mustangs, going 1-for-2 and scoring two runs.

Kristi Rangel was a force in the circle as she threw five complete innings, striking out three, allowing only 2 hits. The outing gave Rangel her second win of the season as the Rattlers improved to 6-2 in the young season.

The Rattlers weekend in Canyon, Texas will continue as they take on Cameron and host West Texas A&M on Day 2 of the West Texas Invitational.
