Second-half surge leads Rattlers to "Battle of Saints" victory

SAN ANTONIO — Home sweet home.

Powered by a strong second-half surge, St. Mary's Men's Basketball outmuscled rival St. Edward's 84-77 in the "Battle of the Saints" matchup at Bill Greehey Arena.  

Yanni Wetzell led the Rattlers with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Kriston Minor added 12 and Bryce Smith chipped in 10. 

St. Mary's won the battle in the paint 44-32, and outscored St. Edward's bench 37-23. 

The Rattlers, now 8-3 at home, improved to 9-14 overall and 5-10 in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward's dropped to 15-8 and 8-7. 

St. Mary's led for most of the game, but didn't begin to put away the Hilltoppers until the latter stages of the second half when they went on a 16-1 run to change the course of play. 

Wetzell's layup with 5:48 remaining capped off the 16-1 stretch to give St. Mary's a 17-point lead at 72-55. 

The Rattlers led 40-32 at the half. 

All throughout, St. Mary's put the clamps on St. Edward's defensively, limiting the Hilltoppers to 41-percent shooting from the floor. The Rattlers, meanwhile, converted at a 58.8-percent rate, including a scorching 16-for-24 (66.7 percent) in the second half. 

St. Mary's will try to keep its momentum going when it hosts Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday in a game scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena. The day also marks Senior Day for the Rattlers, as they'll honor seniors Minor and Smith before the game.
