Rattlers stay hot, knock off #22 West Florida

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

PENSACOLA, Florida — St. Mary's Women's Basketball has strung together a lot of victories to start this 2016-17 season, but perhaps none as impressive as the one they pulled off on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Rattlers, trailing at the break, came back to defeat No. 22-ranked West Florida 78-73 for their sixth straight victory and eighth in nine games.

It marked the first time in Martens' successful 11-year run as St. Mary's head coach that the Rattlers have knocked off a ranked opponent. School records do not indicate that the Rattlers had ever before beaten a ranked opponent as a member of the NCAA.

Kiara Etheridge had her fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Arysia Porter and LaBraile Fields each poured in 19 points to fuel a Rattler attack that shot 48.4 percent from the field.

Fields didn't miss from the field, going 7 for 7 in the game including 3 for 3 from beyond the arc. Porter shot 8 of 12, and added six rebounds and three assists.

Kealani Marquez scored 13 in the game, while fellow starter Tyra Cormier added four. In a turnaround for a Rattler team that has seen its carry a heavy scoring role all season, the starters accounted for all 78 points Saturday.

After jumping to a 24-20 first-quarter lead, St. Mary's trailed 37-35 at the half. But the Rattlers came out red-hot in the second half, shooting 50 percent for the half while holding the Argos to 38.24-percent shooting as a team.
