Etheridge's double-double powers StMU past Minnesota Crookston

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Basketball extended its winning streak to five on Saturday, beating Minnesota-Crookston, 70-57, to finish the annual St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic with a perfect 2-0 record.

Kiara Etheridge led the charge, scoring a season-high 26 points to go along with 11 before 243 fans at Bill Greehey Arena.

Kealani Marquez and Arysia Porter also reached double digits for the Rattlers (7-1) with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

St. Mary's effectively put the game away in the first six minutes of the second half.

After taking a modest 25-18 lead into the break, the Rattlers opened the second half on a 18-4 lead to take a 43-22 advantage with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The scoring onslaught was highlighted by an early breakaway layup from Etheridge, who turned a steal into a fastbreak layup on the other end to lead 32-20 with 6:56 remaining.  The 12-point advantage marked the Rattlers' largest of the night — until it swelled to 21 moments later.

On the Rattlers' very next possession, Kealani Marquez drove to the basket and converted a basket despite getting fouled to push the Snakes' lead to 14. Then, following another turnover, Marquez drained a mid-range jumper for a 36-20 lead.

Minutes later, Tia Mason had back-to-back putbacks, extending the Rattlers' lead to 20 at 42-22.

Minnesota-Crookston fired consecutive 3-pointers to pull within 15 at the end of the third, 47-32, and closed the gap to 47-40 early in the fourth.

But an Arysia Porter 3-pointer with 4:18 remaining helped close the door on Minnesota-Crookston, extending the lead back to double digits at 55-44.

St. Mary's will have a week off, returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 3, when the Rattlers play West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.
