Ferguson's last-second free throws lift Rattlers past #20 MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Just five games into the new season, St. Mary's already has a trademark victory.

Will Ferguson sealed a 72-70 triumph over No. 20-ranked Midwestern State with two free throws with two seconds remaining to stun the Mustangs before 843 fans at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Forward Yanni Wetzell scored 25 points, including 12 on 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, while Freddie Williams scored 19 and Skyler Brooks added 10. Ferguson, who had the game-winning points, had 11 assists in the game.

St. Mary's (2-3) led in the game by as many as 12 en route to handing the Mustangs (4-1) their first loss of the season — but not without a contested second half that saw eight lead changes. Up 44-40 at the half, the Rattlers survived the back-and-forth second half that saw the Mustangs overcome an eight-point deficit with 5:01 remaining to take a 68-67 lead with 2:11 left.

That's when Wetzell made his fourth 3-pointer of the night to lead 70-68, but MSU evened the score on a tip-in by Neman Krtolica with just over a minute remaining.

Midwestern State regained possession with 35 seconds remaining, but missed a jumper with 17 left on the clock. Ferguson forced the foul with two seconds left, and made the Mustangs pay with the game-winning free throws.

St. Mary's won't be back in action until Friday, when they travel to San Angelo, Texas to face Angelo State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. from the Junell Center.
