Rattlers cruise past UTPB for wire-to-wire win

LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's Women's Basketball led from start to finish in a 73-53 victory over former Heartland Conference foe Texas-Permian Basin in nonconference play Friday evening.

Opening up the Arbor Hotels Classic at Lubbock Christian, St. Mary's (3-1) clamped down defensively, dominated the glass and won the battle at the 3-point arc to ease past the Falcons (2-2). 

Kealani Marquez and Ciaira Briseno led with 14 points apiece, while Kiara Etheridge added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Briseno, whose 14 points came off the bench, shot 4 of 4 from 3-point range to help the Rattlers finish 10 of 20 from long range for the game. 

Tyra Cormier and Arysia Porter each scored eight points, as 10 Rattlers scored a basket in the game. 

St. Mary's held UTPB to 35.8 percent shooting (19 of 53) and out rebounded the Falcons 42-28. The Rattlers' bench also outscored the Falcons' 27-12. 

The Rattlers will resume play against Colorado Mines at 4 p.m. Saturday from Lubbock Christian's Rip Griffin Arena.
