STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Offensive efficiency combined with defensive prowess makes for a nice touch on the hardwood.

That was the case Saturday for St. Mary's Women's Basketball, as the Rattlers rolled to their second straight double-digit victory with a 65-53 triumph over Tarleton State.

St. Mary's (2-0) shot nearly 50 percent from the floor (25 of 52) and from 3-point range (5 of 11), and made all but two free throws (10 of 12) while clamping down defensively on the TexAnns (0-2). Tarleton State shot just 35.2 percent from the field in the game.

Arysia Porter led the Rattlers with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, while Tyra Cormier scored 14 on 7-of-11 shooting. LaBraile Fields added 13 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Cormier was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tarleton State University Classic, while Kiara Etheridge — who had a team-high eight boards to go along with five points on Saturday — and Porter joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

St. Mary's trailed 16-13 following the first quarter, but the deficit was short-lived as the Rattlers stormed ahead in the second to take a 30-26 lead into the break. Tarleton State went the final 4:39 of the first half without a basket.

St. Mary's used a 16-9 fourth quarter to put away the game for good.

Destiny Navarro scored nine points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting. Navarro was one of five different Rattlers who accounted for the team's five 3-pointers, as Fields, Etheridge, Kealani Marquez and Ciaira Briseno each made one apiece as well.

The Rattlers will make a quick turnaround and be back in action Monday evening for their home opener against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
