By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — The St. Mary's Rattlers closed out the opening weekend of the season in the final game of the Heartland-RMAC Challenge with an 84-80 loss to the Regis Rangers on Saturday.

In what was a closely contested contest, the Rattlers (0-2) managed to keep within range of the Rangers (2-0) throughout, drawing within one possession with nine seconds left on a Will Ferguson layup. Regis would ultimately put the game out of reach with a pair of made free throws, denying the Rattlers their first victory of the season.

Ferguson was one of four Rattlers to score double-figures as he posted 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Skyler Brooks would add 12 points and eight boards of his own while Freddie Williams led the team with 17 points and six rebounds.

StMU would also get a lift off the bench from A.J. McGlown who posted 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, which included a dunk late in the second half that brought the Rattlers within four.

On Tuesday, the Rattlers will return to the friendly confines of Bill Greehey Arena for the home opener against Eastern New Mexico at 7:30 p.m.
