LUBBOCK, Texas — A turnover in the final seconds ended St. Mary's chances at a wild comeback Friday, as Colorado Mines defeated the Rattlers 87-81 in the season opener.

Down 13 with just over eight minutes remaining, the Rattlers (0-1) chipped away at the deficit with a 19-7 run to trail 77-76 with just under four minutes left at Lubbock Christian's Rip Griffin Center.

Mines was able to push its lead back to six with two minutes remaining, but St. Mary's found itself down by a single possession when Will Ferguson hit a free throw to make it 84-81 with 40 ticks left.

A missed jumper by Mines with four seconds remaining gave the Rattlers a glimmer of hope trailing by three, but St. Mary's turned over the ball and Mines converted an and-one at the buzzer to seal the win.

Ferguson poured in 26 points in his Rattler debut, draining four 3-pointers in 26 minutes. Yanni Wetzell added 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting, while Skyler Brooks added 16 points and eight rebounds.

A.J. McGlown also scored 10 off the bench.

St. Mary's shot 53.8 percent from the floor and made 9-of-17 3-pointers and connected on 16 free throws, but allowed Mines to shoot 54.5 percent from the floor to go along with 23 free throws.

St. Mary's will return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. against Regis.
