Freshmen Whitaker, Maldonado spearhead Rattlers come-from-behind victory

WICHITA, Kansas — In the 89th minute, Alexia Maldonado cemented a 2-1 victory for the St. Mary's Rattlers over the Newman Jets Thursday night at Wilkins Field.
 
After surrendering the opening goal of the match in the 25th minute, the Rattlers (8-3-3, 5-2-3) found an equalizer 12 minutes later off Leah Whitaker's second goal of the season.
 
Despite being outshot 17-9, the Rattlers were able to capitalize once more, late in the match, courtesy of Maldonado who capitalized on a rebound in front of the net.
 
Fellow freshman Erin Longford tallied a match-high eight saves in the victory.
 
St. Mary's will travel to Rogers State on Saturday in the second of a four-match road trip to end the season.
