Villarreal, Johns lead Rattlers in shutout of Falcons

SAN ANTONIO — John-Michael Villarreal made the most of his first career goal as he helped lift the St. Mary's Rattlers past the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons Thursday night at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
 
The Rattlers (4-6-2, 3-5-1) defeated the Falcons 2-0 off of goals from Villarreal and Dan Johns. In the 24th minute, Villarreal and the Rattlers struck first when he scored off an assist from Arik Arredondo.
 
St. Mary's got the all-important insurance goal in the 73rd minute off a Michael Lewis throw-in that assisted Johns on his third goal of the season.
 
Outshooting the Falcons 18-9, the Rattlers placed 50 percent of their shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jack Moore recorded a clean sheet as he made four of his five saves in the second half.
 
Saturday, the Rattlers will host Lubbock Christian at 1:30 p.m. in a Heartland Conference match before embarking on a three-match road trip.
