Smith’s career-high 24 leads Rattlers over Newman

SAN ANTONIO — It was a festive atmosphere inside Bill Greehey Arena as the St. Mary's Rattlers played host to the Newman Jets Saturday afternoon. The buzz surrounding the halftime ring ceremony, honoring the 2015 St. Mary's Softball team, was matched the play of senior Bryce Smith, who led the Rattlers to a 84-65 victory over the Jets.

Scoring 17 of his career-high 24 points in the first half, Smith (Corpus Christi, Texas) set the tone for that Rattlers as they jumped out to a 47-26 lead heading into intermission. Smith shot 8-of-12 from the field, knocking down six three-pointers, falling one shy of tying a St. Mary's single game record.

Yanni Wetzell (Fr., Auckland, New Zealand) was impressive with 14 points on 70 percent shooting from the field.

Contributing off the bench was Stefan Wright (Jr., Adelaide, Australia) who poured in 11 points and five rebounds.

In his first start since Jan. 2, Dimitri Peterson (Fr., San Antonio) provided the Rattlers with a spark, scoring nine points and four rebounds, adding three assists and two steals.

The Rattlers will travel to Claremore, Okla. for a meeting with Rogers State on Feb. 4, kicking off a short two-game road trip.
